A gentle restoration has returned the masterpiece to its former glory and unlocked some, but not all, of its secrets. The small panel is on display at the Louvre.

The Madonna of Chancellor Rolin is Jan van Eyck’s only painting in France, a feat given that he only produced about 20. Most are in museums in Frankfurt, Berlin, Vienna, Dresden, Bruges, etc. or have remained in situ , like the Adoration of the Mystic Lamb altarpiece in Saint Bavo’s cathedral in Ghent. Six have traveled to the Louvre for the exhibition organized around The Madonna of Chancellor Rolin , including the Lucca Madonna , which has never left Frankfurt’s Städel Museum until now. “We’ve never seen so many van Eycks in France,” says exhibition curator Sophie Caron, who carried out an in-depth study of the 66-by-62 cm/25.98-by-24.40 in painting on wood.
