The 1964 painting Study for Portrait of Lucian Freud has been out of public view for almost 60 years. Bacon based it on a photo shot by his friend and assistant John Deakin, showing Freud sitting on a bed with outstretched arms. It was originally painted as a central panel of a large-scale triptych.
