A booming activity in the early 20th century, sports became the ideal subject of avant-garde paintings. Cubist André Lhote’s favorite was rugby.

Despite the misleading title, the theme of this 1916 painting by André Lhote (1855-1962) is indeed rugby. The ball is definitely oval and the players’ bodies are intertwined, as often happens in this sport but much less in football. The title on the back of the painting says Footballeurs…
