Close to Matisse and the Fauves, Albert Marquet (1875-1947) carved himself a niche as a painter of water. While in Bordeaux, he tackled the Place des Quinconces and the Garonne in an improvisatory style.

As a child, Albert Marquet used to escape to the busy quays and port of Bordeaux , his native city. Sickly, disabled, short-sighted, shy and taciturn Marquet surely owes his image as "the gentleman of the painting world" to his character. He was almost assumed to be forgotten, but a 2016 monograph show at the Musée d’Art Moderne in Paris proved highly popular…
