Created c. 1896-1899, the work is a study for a painting kept at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., from the former, and oh so prestigious, collection of Julie Reinach-Goujon. It turned the heads of art lovers this past Friday in Drouot, at twice its high estimate.
